Eight Horse-Drawn Stake-Side Wagon
Description
An eight horse-drawn wagon assembly constructed from cast iron throughout. This heavy weight class toy includes a four-wheeled stake-side wagon with an open bed and twelve-spoked wheels rotating on metal axles. The team consists of eight horses arranged in four pairs, each detailed with molded harnesses and depicted in a walking gait. A central drawbar connects the horses to the wagon assembly. On the flank of one horse, there are raised cast characters appearing as an A and an L followed by an illegible circular character (photo 4). No other readable manufacturer names or marks are present on the components. Faint traces of red pigment are visible on the horse collars (photo 7) and wheel hubs (photo 1). A couple of the pins to connect the horse pairs to each other are not present.
Condition report:
The assembly shows significant and uniform surface oxidation and rust across all cast iron components (photo 1). The original finish is almost entirely lost, with only minor traces of red paint remaining (photo 7). The wagon is missing its driver figure, as evidenced by the empty seating area (photo 5). The wagon bed is empty and appears to be missing original cargo such as barrels or crates (photo 2). Despite surface corrosion, the castings are solid with no visible cracks or breaks, and the wheels remain functional and free-rolling (photo 6).
