Modernist Studio Pottery Ovoid Stoneware Vessel with Sgraffito Decoration
Description
A studio pottery stoneware vessel of ovoid form, featuring a short flared rim and a speckled buff clay body. The exterior surface is finished using the sgraffito technique, where an off-white slip has been applied and hand-carved to reveal the darker clay beneath. The decoration consists of an intricate abstract pattern of concentric circles, radiating sunburst lines, cross-hatched sections, and sweeping organic borders. The interior of the vessel is finished with a transparent glaze. The base of the piece bears an incised monogram consisting of a central vertical line with two stacked semi-circular loops on the left side and two horizontal lines intersecting the vertical and extending to the right. The monogram is not legible as a name.
Condition report:
The vessel is in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or professional repairs to the rim, body, or base (photos 1, 3). Minor textural irregularities and pinholes in the slip surface are characteristic features of the handmade firing process and are not considered defects.
