A Pair of Folk Art Mixed Metal Creature Sculptures
Description
A pair of stylized zoomorphic sculptures handcrafted from mixed metals, primarily copper and brass tubing and sheet metal. The larger sculpture features a cylindrical body tapering toward the rear, supported by four legs fashioned from bent tubing. It possesses three dorsal fins, a long curved tail, washer-style eyes, and a partially open mouth. The smaller sculpture is characterized by a wide, gaping mouth with hand-cut jagged teeth, six curved legs, and a series of fins along the spine. Both pieces exhibit visible solder joints and hand-cut metal components characteristic of studio-produced folk art or brutalist metalwork. The metal surfaces show a variegated patina ranging from golden-yellow to dark brown oxidation. No signatures, maker marks, foundry stamps, labels, or inscriptions are visible on any exterior surfaces of either sculpture.
Condition report:
The sculptures show signs of age and manual construction consistent with their style. The metal surfaces exhibit scattered pitting, surface scratches, and areas of oxidation throughout (Photo 1). There are irregular patches of light-colored solder and surface wear, most notably on the dorsal fin of the larger four-legged creature (Photo 2). The patina is uneven across both figures, showing natural variation in color and texture. One wing is detached, but is present.
