Vintage Sunnen St. Louis Adjustable Industrial Shop Stand
Description
This industrial adjustable shop stand is manufactured by the Sunnen Products Company. The stand is constructed with a heavy circular cast iron base and a central steel pipe column. The base features embossed lettering in a curved layout: the word SUNNEN is readable across the top curve, with USA situated directly below it, and ST. LOUIS along the bottom edge. These marks identify the manufacturer as being based in Missouri. The stand includes a sleeve-style height adjustment mechanism secured by a large, five-lobed cast iron star knob. A section of the adjustment sleeve retains remnants of pink paint. The top head assembly is currently fitted with a component that has been heavily coated in a textured bright blue material, which obscures the original shape and details of the upper tool mount. The circular base includes three holes intended for bolting the unit to a floor or workbench.
Condition report:
The item is in well-worn industrial condition with heavy surface rust and oxidation visible across the cast iron base and steel column as shown in photos 1 and 4. The pink paint on the adjustment collar is significantly chipped and worn (photo 3). The top assembly is covered in a thick, irregular blue coating that masks the underlying form (photo 2). While the cast iron hand knob is present and appears structurally sound (photo 1), the mechanical function of the internal threads and height adjustment is untested. General pitting, surface grime, and scattered paint splatters consistent with long-term shop use are present throughout the piece.
