Description
An antique Singer treadle sewing machine cabinet constructed of quartersawn oak with a cast iron base. The cabinet features a rectangular fold-out top that opens to reveal a drop-head sewing machine mechanism. The case is supported by two side-mount banks of two drawers each, finished with turned wood knobs. The base is composed of ornate openwork cast iron scrollwork. Cast into the central iron cross-brace are the characters reading SINGER. The arm of the sewing machine head displays a gold-toned decal reading SINGER. A circular metal side plate on the machine head is present, though the markings are not legible due to heavy oxidation. The machine head is secured to the cabinet with two metal hinges.
Condition report:
The piece is in fair as-found condition with significant wear. The wood cabinet shows heavy surface dust, water staining, and extensive finish loss to the top and side panels (Photo 1, 4). The cast iron base and foot treadle show heavy surface rust and oxidation throughout (Photo 2). The sewing machine head exhibits substantial surface rust, pitting, and loss of original finish (Photo 3, 5). The drive belt is absent, and the mechanical functionality of the machine has not been tested.
